چکیده

The goal of white-box cryptography is to design implementations of common cryptographic algorithm (e.g. AES) that remain secure against an attacker with full control of the implementation and execution environment. This concept was put forward a decade ago by Chow et al. (SAC 2002) who proposed the first white-box implementation of AES. Since then, several works have been dedicated to the design of new implementations and/or the breaking of existing ones. In this paper, we describe a new attack against the original implementation of Chow et al. (SAC 2002), which efficiently recovers the AES secret key as well as the private external encodings in complexity 2. Compared to the previous attack due to Billet et al. (SAC 2004) of complexity 2, our attack is not only more efficient but also simpler to implement. Then, we show that the last candidate white-box AES implementation due to Karroumi (ICISC 2010) can be broken by a direct application of either Billet et al. attack or ours. Specifically, we show that for any given secret key, the overall implementation has the exact same distribution as the implementation of Chow et al. making them both vulnerable to the same attacks. By improving the state of the art of white-box cryptanalysis and putting forward new attack techniques, we believe our work brings new insights on the failure of existing whitebox implementations, which could be useful for the design of future solutions.

A Tutorial on White-box AES

White-box cryptography concerns the design and analysis of implementations of cryptographic algorithms engineered to execute on untrusted platforms. Such implementations are said to operate in a white-box attack context. This is an attack model where all details of the implementation are completely visible to an attacker: not only do they see input and output, they see every intermediate comput...

Revisiting the BGE Attack on a White-Box AES Implementation

White-box cryptography aims to protect the secret key of a cipher in an environment in which an adversary has full access to the implementation of the cipher and its execution environment. In 2002, Chow, Eisen, Johnson and van Oorschot proposed a white-box implementation of AES. In 2004, Billet, Gilbert and Ech-Chatbi presented an efficient attack (referred to as the BGE attack) on this impleme...

Several Masked Implementations of the Boyar-Peralta AES S-Box

Threshold implementation is a masking technique that provides provable security for implementations of cryptographic algorithms against power analysis attacks. In recent publications, several different threshold implementations of AES have been designed. However in most of the threshold implementations of AES, the Canright S-Box has been used. The Boyar-Peralta S-Box is an alternative implement...

Using Normal Bases for Compact Hardware Implementations of the AES S-Box

The substitution box (S-box) of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is based on the multiplicative inversion s(x) = x−1 in GF(256) and followed by an affine transformation in GF(2). The S-box is the most expansive building block of any hardware implementation of the AES, and the multiplicative inversion is the most costly step of the S-box transformation. There exist many publications about ...
